Not surprised... The cost is probably going to go down with the advances in technology, but most of the car companies are continuing to make their own advances in car tech so the likelihood of having non hybrid and having a higher mpg car is more likely and also comparable to the Prius. heck, even Ferrari has a hybrid.

"Interesting, since 100% of the people I know that have one, would not consider buying anything else."
Since I bought a new 2007 Prius I have purchased a new 2008 F-250. Recently traded that for a 2009 ML320 Bluetec. Still not interested in replacing the Prius.
What the Yahoo! re-writer didn't understand and as a result most who only read the cited Yahoo! re-write and not the original Polk study is that the numbers are of hybrid owner's next purchase. If we were all single-vehicle owners then this would make sense but few who own two vehicles chose similar. The whole point in having a second vehicle is to have something that serves where the first is lacking.
My Prius can not pull my travel trailer. The F-250 would loaf along with a mere 6000 pounds in tow. The ML will work harder but is more right-sized for my needs and useful for things the F-250 was not.

bikergirlss, do you mainly do highway driving? If your leasing with fair market value it might make sense to get another vehicle. Prius maintains price better than most, and they will have no trouble selling a used prius with so few miles.
You do know your hybrid battery is warranted for 100K miles.Expensive Hybrid Car Battery Replacements Are Unnecessary
"Toyota officials report that of the 1.1 million Prii sold in the United States over the past 10 years, only about 500 batteries have been replaced (0.05 percent). The batteries were originally built to last 150,000 miles, but they have exceeded expectations, with many Prii logging more than 250,000 miles on the original battery packs."
Ford Escape's seem to have a pretty good track record..

I probably will not buy mine, unless I have too- leasing it now and halfway to the end of it. If I have to buy it out at the end of the lease I will likely sell it then; there are too many cars out there now getting comparable gas mileage without the expensive battery. I've had it 18 mos and have just under 10k miles on it now so I don't think I'll have any problems getting rid of it.

We had a Honda Civic hybrid until this year. It was totaled in an accident and replaced with a Buick Verano. The hybrid was, as is the Buick, a commuter car. Initially 52 mpg was not uncommon with the hybrid, but as the batteries deteriorated we did good to get 41-42 mpg. Replacement battery price and the longevity of the batteries will keep me from another hybrid in the near future. Can buy a lot of gas for $3K.

I think with the addition of the expanded vehicles offered by the prius line, you will find they will continue to sell well.
Ford fans would drool (or ... druul...) on selling half the number of hybrids that are offered by Toyota. Many are being "swayed" by the mpg on highway...
Many people are still buying toyota, even if they don't buy a prius...
Not everyone buys the same vehicle for several decades...

GBHUGVA - I wouldn't worry about Toyota too much. They've outgrown their growth cycle and are now into the maximizing return point on the curve. After 7 of their cars, I won't go back.
My point about relative numbers was directed at the 25% re-purchase statistic. If normal car owners re-purchase at at a rate of only 20%, then the Prius is doing fantastic at capturing dedicated owners. If industry average is 50% re-purchase rates, then Toyota is sliding into a bad place with the Prius.
I just need more information to understand what's going on is all.

I have only had my 2011 Prius III since September 2011, and bought it new. I drive it mainly on the interstate and I put an average of 500-700 miles per week on it. At almost 30K, it has been flawless, and performs exactly as it's designed, i.e. it gets me and my stuff from here to there on the street/road comfortably with lowest fuel cost and emissions. What makes the Prius so fuel efficient is not just the Synergy HyBrid Drive, but also the unique body shape and overall construction (which is in its third generation in fourteen years.) That's why the same drive in the Camry's or Highlanders don't come close to matching in mileage.
As an American, I'm hearten to see Prius' sales success spurring design teams at Ford and GM to innovate in the same direction. If the HyBrid standard bearer, Prius wasn't a success, as the theme of this opening thread appears to posit, than I'm sure we would never be talking about a Ford Fusion or a Chevy Volt, at least not in 2012. This is a win win for everyone, bring it on! I've owned Toyotas, Fords, GMs, and Mazdas so I'm not biased other than to say "let the best value (not the cheapest) product win."
Happy driving,

Prius New Car sales in July 2012 of 16,643. Prius YTD Sales of 143,297. The Toyota Prius is the #1 selling Hybrid of all time, and the number keeps growing each year.

Is this a meaningful statistic?
It would be interesting to see the Prius number compared to the percentage of all car owners buying the same car again.

Bridge, What problems has your neighbor had, we still don't drive in the rain. Breaks lock up when you just touch then lightly, scary, the wife won't drive it when its wet out. ave 41 mpg is the only good thing about the prius. Will trade it this fall for the new Ford hybrid.

I hate the quality of my wifes crappy prius BUT.. it does get 40-45. I have had to use my wifes prius to track problems she finds, and calc. mpg's are right in there at 41-44 for ours. The gas milage is the ONLY thing I like about it. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is a much more versatile car with far better quality and ave. mpg is 32.5, for a larger, SUV is admerable. Looking foward to Ford's new hybrids getting 47 mpg, this fall!

Those buying are most likely buying due to the mpg's and the high price of gas. The ave. customer does not take the time to work out the numbers. They would see that they are not worth it!

Prius sales are at # 14 this year for all vehicles. 126K vehicles have been sold in the 1st 6 months in US. Prius is #3 best selling vehicle world wide...
So, guess consumers are indicating the vehicle is a good value...
