Many things; first, I have to be comfortable driving it, and the features are part of that (but not everything), and then the price has to be reasonable, not only the up-front cost but also the operating cost, which includes fuel economy as well as reliability and maintenance costs.

If the price is to high you don't really save on fuel economy. Because you spent all of your savings in buying the car.

I like big vehicles for room , comfort & safety . I don't expect great fuel economy and don't drive many miles annually . I never buy new , 3 to 5 years old saves big bucks and cheaper insurance . I do most of the service jobs myself & maintain my trucks well . My Chevy van with a 5.7 l. engine is running great after 21 years on the road .

I want to be safe in the car I drive, so engineering features would be a prime concern.

Starts mainly with the price. Gotta be within some kinda budget. Then figure all the safety, fuel mileage, looks, and whether it would serve whatever purposes I need it for. But, I gotta start with price.

Safety first -- design and size of vehicle. Secondly, good support for backs of drivers and passengers. Then, enough comfortable room for tall folks and for their legs to stretch a bit.
