With Memorial Day over and the driving season underway, let's take a look at how our gasoline supplies stand compared to past years. Obviously with higher supply available, prices will be somewhat limited to high they go.

2005: 216.7 million barrels (actual), $2.077/gal average

jzzy: I'd say, add some good supplies, a well oiled PR machinery and a very high dose of greed and you come up with the same.

Add in a few smart people with a lot of money, and you can say goodbye to old-fashioned supply and demand.

There could be a thousand explanations on why gasoline is so expensive but the short answer is greed. avarice and vengeance.

I think the laws of supply and demand have gone out the window in recent years due to, like granitestater mentioned, it costs more to get the oil today than it did in recent years as well.

Yeah...because since CLEARLY 2006 and 2008's numbers are nearly the same...yet $1.12/gallon difference means there's NOOOOOO speculation involved....none at all...(extremely sarcastic just in case that wasn't obvious), haha. This is exactly why I bought a hybrid...so I don't have to buy gas very often!

Just think, the government which doesn't add any value in the production process, receives more profit per gallon of gasoline than any single entity in the supply chain. Pumping the oil, transporting the oil, refining the oil, transporting the oil products, and selling the oil products each earn less profit than the current taxes. A company may earn more profit if they control multiple steps along the supply chain. But profit margins are not very high in the oil industry, they have huge profits because they are making a few cents per gallon when they manage to sell fuels by the billions of gallons every week.

my2002m - they used to base their prices on the old "supply and demand" axiom. What are the other parts of the equation?

Supply has nothing to do with price! It's like the price of steel versus gold. The oil we get today comes from expensive wells. ( see: Deepwater Horizon, e.g. )

Prices here dropped .50 cents from the 2nd week of May to Memorial day... after spiking to $2.95 we are at $2.45...

The chart shows supplies within the same range for the last ten years with shows that demand here in the U.S. hasn't changed much but gas prices have... mostly speculumators doing it to us...

The chart show supply does not correlate with price.

And $2.50 per gallon should not result in a loss to retailers because the drop in oil price of $20 per barrel is 50 cents per gallon.in contrast we've seen only a 20-cent drop in price. Who's pocketing the difference?

raleightom...If this administration spent money like it ought to, it may not be so bad to contribute in some way to making America great. However racking up 12 trillion dollars of debt to saddle our children and grand children and great grandchildren with is not my idea of knowing what to do with money. Smacking people with increased rates and higher taxes dosent show me a government that knows what they are doing. Your point is well taken though that the other option is to give it to "big oil". Of the two, I would have to say "big oil" as they are at least creating jobs and in a small way helping out Americans that work for them which is more than I can say for the other option.

The fallacy of a need for taxes to fix our roads is long one. They been playing that tune in good and bad economies. Its like a shell game where is the tax revenue going.

RENEGADEGAS, don't forget the Chosen One said when he took office that he thought gasoline ought to be around $3.50-4.00 to "encourage" drivers to buy more economical vehicles and use less gasoline.

Who would you rather pay "Big Oil" or "Uncle Sam" ? I choose the latter. We know what "Big Oil" does with profits ! Why not let government spread it around a little ?Prices here are going back up already !

Better fill up now and fill those spare storage tanks too; before it's too late ;)
