It's no mystery that producing power, refining oil, and producing chemicals are harmful to the environment. But how many places near your residence are "poisoned places"?

I was shocked to examine this map and see all the filthy places that are harmed by chemical producers, refineries, or power plants.

While viewing some refineries, I noted their terrible pollution release history- millions of pounds of pollutants released into the air. Some folks are all too aware of the dangers of living near these facilities, but many of the smaller offenders go overlooked.

So- how close do you live to a poisoned place, and does it surprise you at how many violations or how serious the air pollution is?

Check it...

what's frightening is that the government provides permits for plants to burn stuff that's not safe to burn for fuel in their plants (hazardous waste, solvents, etc.) and writes it into the permit for the plant (e.g. cement plants), which then can pollute and no one can do a thing about it.

Note that nuclear power plants are not on this map. Maybe that is because they have very, very low emissions.

Many of the larger offenders go overlooked also. It's part of the price we pay for ignoring reality to have some of the things we want. I'm surprised that MadTraveler allows himself to live in such ignorance. I'm guessing that it's because he didn't grow up in a cancer cluster and watch many of his childhood friends suffer and die at an early age because of these pollutants.

Get off their backs. It is really not that bad. Remember what bad is - 30 years ago mechanics just dumped used oil out in the ditch - and we are still alive. (I am NOT suggesting we go back to that.)

With industry came pollution and prosperity. Over time air, water and land became cleaner.

Now industry is gone along with prosperity, soon to follow is our way of life and then total anarchy as society unravels.

The Babylonians. the Medes, the Persians, the Romans, the Egyptians, the Spainish Empire, the French Empire, the British Empire etc. lasted hundreds and some thousands of years, but, just like America today, they all thought it would last forever.

Oh come on people! How many people go to the restroom and never wash their hands and handle door handles, cell phones, or even take samples in restaurants? Everyone says they wash their hands, but the data doesn't back that up. AND that is something you can control and are shocked at something like this.

it only surprises me in that those who live in those areas let the polluters get away with it

and how about the EPA? do they know what the letters in their acronym stand for?

Check the map in your zipcode, click on the location dots, read the reports for a surprise or two.

Fortunately, not very close and, no, no surprise at the serious pollution issues.

There are local toxic waste sites all over New England from the 1800s and 1900s that still ooze death daily. Just don't go swimming in one or walk along the nice park path that follows the shoreline.

On October 31st, the world population surpassed the 7 BEEEEEELLION mark. THAT should scare you.
