In a move aimed at saving lives, the U.S. Department of Transportation recently proposed a new federal standard that would require electronic stability control (ESC) on large commercial trucks, motorcoaches, and other large buses.

According to the agency, the technology, once implemented, could prevent up to 56% of rollover crashes each year, and 14% of loss of control crashes.

"The Department and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have long recognized the potential impact of stability control technology in reducing deaths and serious injuries that result from rollover crashes," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Today's proposal is a major step forward to improving the safety of large commercial...

How about teaching 4-wheelers how to behave (or not behave) around big vehicles? Too many times I see a car pull into a small space in front of a big rig (18-wheeler, bus, etc.) and then hit the brakes. People got to understand, something that big cannot stop on a dime. But the blame goes to the driver of the big rig, not the car (who in many instances gets away with his/her life, while the big rig driver may not.

Why don't they just require these big rigs, RV's, buses to have regulators/governors in them? Slow their speed down? We are just allowing them to go faster with stability controls on them. They go fast enough as it is.

As with anything, if people would police themselves and do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, no one would have to step in and regulate, require or pass a law. People try to get away with whatever they can to save themselves a buck at the expense of everyone else. How is that the governments fault?

I'm all for safety and saving lives, but does it always have to come via government regulations which causes big sweeping increases in cost?

Being a full time traveler in a fifth wheel, it is interesting that the big rigs don't have a ESC system on there trucks. I have seen many big trucks going down the road swaying in the wind or over steering. It is scary and I think it should be manditory for everyones safety.

Will this help with your stability when bending your elbow or taking those little white pills to keep your eyes open wide. probably will help in some instances but most accidents are caused by the nut behind the wheel not taking proper actions in advance to avoid them.

I hope the electronic stability control (ESC) on large commercial trucks is passed. It shouldn't add too much to the cost of these trucks and the rigs should be safer from an equipment standpoint because so much coordinated dynamic information is monitored.

Doesn't improve gas mileage nor drop the price of gas. The only thing that will accomplish is high vehicle prices.

Braking, steering, etc. have all greatly improved over the years in big trucks. Then along comes the CDL. A lot of the old drivers quit, retired, found other work, and are gone. Now most truck drivers go to school and learn to pass the CDL test, they learn how to pas the driving test, but they don't learn what the old drivers could have taught them: How to drive like a professional truck driver. So thanks to more government regulations and interference the government has helped to create a new problem. Naturally their solution is: More government regulations and interference.
