For decades, Porsche, VW, and Audi have shared parts amongst themselves. They are not separate like most Americans see Ford, GM, and Chrysler.
There are too many auto companies on this rock, anyway. The first to go away should be Geeley.

This may affect the price of my next VW but I doubt that it will impact the cost of gas I put into it.

From the article:
"Ferdinand Piech, also the chairman of Volkswagen, has proposed that Porsche sell its sportscar business to Volkswagen, a move opposed by his cousin and Porsche Chairman Wolfgang Porsche."
Family squabbles like this don't very often result in good business decisions. Maybe it time for the family to relinquish control before they all go down in flames.

Hmmm.. who designed the VW air cooled engine? Oh, yes, that's right - Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. And what three cars are marketed together and share a significant number of replacement parts? Oh, that's right Porsche, Audi and VW. They already cooperate on a number of fronts. I thought VW was a major shareholder in Porsche (and possibly the other way as well). What's the big deal? All three cars are pieces of junk in terms of reliability.

I've always thought these two companies were intertwined anyway. Didn't the Porsche and volkswagen have interchangable engines back in the 70's?

These two German companies are top-notch and world class in automotive engineering and styling as well as factory workmanship. Even so...times are hard economically worldwide. The government of Quatar is very smart to invest long-term in well-run companies. Looks like another mutually beneficial financial transaction. Nothing more. Nowadays, with global economies, anyone can invest in most any company...worldwide. The lines of "american companies", "chinese companies", "dutch companies"...are blurring. Foreign ownership becoming a majority stakeholder in many companies is increasing. Most north americans would be surprised...if they took the time to find out...what percent foreign ownership has in north american businesses. Many are at 40 percent and higher.
