Porsche-Volkswagen showdown looms

CNN Money -- FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Porsche's squabbling owners are set to discuss an investment by Qatar in the next two weeks, a milestone which could change the dynamics of a Porsche/Volkswagen merger, people close to the talks said.

A decision on Qatar's entry may come even before key family members are set to gather at a Volkswagen supervisory board meeting on July 15, and a day later for the centenary celebrations at VW unit Audi, the people said.

Spokesmen for Porsche and VW declined to comment.

A successful investment from Qatar could strengthen Porsche Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking's negotiating hand as he tries to strike a deal with VW

Qatar has to do something with all that oil money, can't repay the US for kicking Sadam out in 91.

Interesting that, while Porsche owns 51% of VW, the next biggest shareholder is the German state of Lower Saxony. Looks like "the People" already own a piece of the "People's Car" (or in German, Volks Wagen).

In the US, we call that Government Motors.

This reminds me of my company. We bought them, but they ran the show for about 1-2 years, when it was finally demonstrated they didn't know what they were doing.

Middle East countries owning manufacturing plants in Western countries is a scary thought. Will they impose their religious law on the plant workers' conduct?

More assets in the civilized world being gobbled up by the Arabs. Not the most desirable of circumstances. But it does have a significant bright side - when the Great Recession ends (probably sometime after regime change in the United States) it means the Arabs will suffer when OPEC tries to run up oil prices again. And that may be a moderating influence. The Arabs took a bath with the Great Recession - not as bad as the civilized world, but a major hits.

They already say that VW, is the largest car sales in the world right now. I already think that the Carreo, and Boxer already look like a Beetle.

I always thought there was a tie in between the two as in the early 60's you could buy a VW with a Porsche engine... they were fast.

Qatar should really hope that the price of crude stays high. But then they could probably buy VW/Porsche with pocket change.

The hunter became the hunted. That story seems to have played out more the once over the past year.
