San Francisco Bay area transit considers imposing a mileage tax

GasBuddy Blog -- Under a proposal that is in its early stages, San Francisco Bay area drivers could be required to install GPS-like odometers or other devices in their vehicles and pay anywhere from a penny to 10-cents per mile driven, according to reports from AP and the Sacramento Bee.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments approved going forward with a study of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax as part of what the AP says is "a broader environmental review of several transportation options."

The current proposal would charge motorists a tax on every mile they drive in the nine-county region as a way to raise money for roads and public transit while reducing traffic and pollution.

This might be more applicable for electric vehicles which arent paying their fair share of road taxes.

Brilliant. Excellent way to depress a local economy and cause people to "vote with their feet" (i.e., move away from the jurisdiction).

Seems to me it would be much simpler and more practical to just put it on the gas tax.

yet another reason why I will not be living in California when I retire. I'm always amazed that California continues to vote in politicians who desire to socially engineer California into being a socialist, green society.

Why would any politician use the tax $$ already on hand and designated for a specific purpose when she/he can make news with this wonderful new way to raise $$ for needed things? Or, why would they ever use $$ for needed things when they can instead fund pet projects that make them look good and then whine about having to cut necessary programs?

Old news we've heard before. This taxes the gas guzzlers the same as the EV or hybrids and green cars. How will THAT help the environment? ! More government considering options without looking at the big picture.

I don't think this will work. If I lived there and decided to drive across the US or Canada, this would really add on to the trip. Unless it turns itself off outside the area, I would not appreciate this.

If I lived in that area, I would register my car in a different state. Things like this explain why California is traditionally a blue state.

I thought that we were already paying a few cents tax on gasoline to help repair roads? What have they done with that money? I'm sure it went to some politician's pet project instead of where it was supposed to go.

That is what the gas taxes are for. So they want people there to pay double.

What happened to the gas tax that was suppose to maintain road and bridges.

If the voters in California keep voting in these politicians, they deserve it.

Add a penny to the states gas tax. You'll never see the price increase because the oil companies increases would dwarf any tax.

The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) imposes a gas tax to support transit and GVRD area transportation infrastructure. Recently (July 1, 2012) a carbon tax was added to the existing gas tax.
