For Toyota's Lexus it's deja vu: floor mat problem prompts recall

GasBuddy Blog -- Late last week NHTSA issued this statement about Toyota's 2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450 H models, approximately 154,000 vehicles:

"After carefully reviewing the data, including consumer complaints and information provided by the manufacturer, NHTSA requested that Toyota conduct an immediate recall of the aforementioned Lexus vehicles for a serious safety issue involving potential pedal entrapment by the floor mat." Pedal entrapment can cause runaway acceleration.

If you think this sounds familiar, you're not imagining things. For Toyota's Lexus, it's deja vu all over again. NHTSA alerted Toyota to the same problem in 2009 for the Lexus ES350 and Lexus IS and Toyota responded to NHTSA that it was not certain that any "safety...

I don't understand why this matter was not considered during planning and testing and quality control, and it happened again? poor system or no system?

Hard to believe that people can control their cars when they can't even control their floor mats.

It seems Toyota is having a lot of recalls the last few years, what does this say about the company.

First off you can't 'jumper a computer' in a Prius and have the car function at all. Anything other than a factory floormat could possibly cause issues with the mat moving forward under pedals. It's called use your head, if the mat slides around, move it back or only use factory mats and make sure that mat anchor is fastened. Common sense is all that is needed.

Manufacturers should not be responsible for how drivers kick their feet around and displace the mat.

Saw this yesterday. Toyota it not willing to admit that, yeah, something is wrong with the computers. Yet a professor at SIU-Carbondale was able to replicate the failure in the Prius by jumpering the computer. Toyota made a point of ignoring him. Toyota needs to have their backsides sued off, much like Ford with the Pinto of the '70s

The mechanical solution is probably a done deal. It's the potential litigation that's causing them to drag their feet.

You wonder how Toyota deals with qulity control as well as they do when you see how they have handled this little problem. Oh wait! Maybe they don't deal well with this and their quality is a figment of the imagination of a loving press.
