New Jersey DOT issues deer alert

GasBuddy Blog -- New Jersey's Dept of Transportation (and undoubtedly the DOTs in many other states too) is urging motorists to be on the alert for white-tailed deer on the roadways with the arrival of the fall breeding season, especially during the morning and evening commutes when visibility may be poor and deer activity is likely to be higher.

"White-tailed deer are on the move and unpredictable during this season,” said NJ's Fish and Wildlife Director David Chanda. “Deer are much more likely to dart into roads without warning at this time of year. why is common sense so uncommon?
and... if you pay attention to the road and scan the sides of the road for deer instead of talking on the cell phone or whatever else, you'll have a much better chance of being able to react and avoid an accident.

OK, This happens every year granted, but in many states areas once more rural are now more suburban or urban, yet deer populations are now going unchecked more so than ever, less deer are being hunted and as there populations grow they expand their territories. In major city urban cores, there have been deer hit.

On the other side of that coin is what I call "urban deer", where dear are in larger numbers in areas where they see cars often and are less often spooked by autos. I see deer that will stand a few feet off the roadway and ignore me passing by quite often in my suburban area.

We have had several fatal accidents in this area because of deer, one vehicle hit one, knocking it into another car, fatally injuring the driver.
