Tesla Motors unveils Supercharger EV stations

GasBuddy Blog -- We've heard plenty about the promise of electric vehicles (EVs) but, they're still way too costly for most of us to even consider. Having said that, it is intriguing to see the progress Tesla Motors is making.

The San Mateo, CA based auto company last week unveiled the first of six Supercharger stations, which will allow its new Model S sedan to travel long distances with fast charging throughout California, parts of Nevada and Arizona.

The charging technology is already used by the Model S, which enabled Tesla to create the Supercharger device at minimal cost. The electricity used by the Supercharger comes from a solar carport system provided by SolarCity, resulting in almost zero marginal energy costs after installation...

It's called progress, when Henry Ford made the first cars they were powered by ethanol, when gasoline became easier we went to that, now literally we can drive our cars for free after the initial set up costs. The inevitable and much needed for our economy end to gasoline powered cars, at least in the sunny states is within reach. The very worst thing that will happen is gasoline will become cheap enough to compete with them.

Cost is always the big complaint when new technology comes out. It is hard to make advances without early adopters, like Tesla owners, to bring technology to the future masses.

posted below was the following...

Computers were massive and unaffordable in their infancy, too. Hopefully this is the tip of the iceberg so eventually we can have more choices as consumers which will drive car and gas-related products down.

-----
my comment...

Computers and all electronics had the potential for miniaturization and corresponding manufacturing techniques that allowed prices to go down while capability increased. The same for all electronics.

I do not envision mechanical systems doing the same thing. Physics and reality limit what can be done. Definitely improvements can and will continue but they will top out at some point. How the cost compares to competing energy sources will determine the acceptance.

Keep trying. BUT on your own dime, not the taxpayer's dime.

From what I interpret from the article, these SuperCharger station are going to be limited to Tesla vehicles which I find unacceptable. If they are trying to improve the image of EV's - including their own - the charging stations should be interchangeable for all EV's.

Another blog article is stuck -- day 2. Enough already.

EV's not affordable no matter how many days GB runs this.

Get over these high priced, unproven EV's. Will they ever be more than money pits for the rich and famous? Doubt it!

While increasing fueling infrastructure is critical, Tesla still has a long ways to go in bringing down the price of it's EVs.

Seems unlikely that the company would install the charging stations and allow the public to use them free of charge. there has to be a catch.
