I'm emotionally against it too, but it's that kind of thinking that will keep us in this mess. Tweak the dials of the free market economy to get what you want. Lower taxes to increase demand, which increases prices and makes us even more dependent on foreign oil? No way!

Higher fuel tax is the only way out for a capital-based economy. I don't want to pay it any more than anyone else, but if gas were $5.00 a gallon, people would be driving less with smaller cars... and we'd have less addiction to foreign oil! The money (if we could keep it out of politicians' pockets or pork barrels) could go to alternate energy development. Too obvious? Maybe we like our addiction and like fighting wars in the middle east...

Paying more money on top of overpriced gas is not going to stop anyone from driving. A certain minimum amount of driving will always be necessary.

throttle - are the Enron, Qwest, Level 3, Countrywide Financial etc. mismanagement actions better or worse than congressional action that will contain some pork?
At least, legislators come up for election!
Prices will go up further, no matter what! Who should benefit?

cloud2, you've got to be kidding! Those clowns in Congress would just take the increased revenue and spend it on pork.

Support. It's the only free-market way out of this mess. Raise prices, that reduces demand. Alternative energy sources are developed. Voila!
No, I HATE paying taxes of any form, but this one makes too much sense.

Support! It's the only way out of this dependence-on-foreign-oil mess and nobody wants to take the medicine that will cure us. If we had done that back in the Jimmy Carter years, we'd be self-sufficient on renewable energy by now. Too bad, too late.

No way. I'm paying too much for gas already without having to pay more for a tax that is not going to deter me from driving any more than I already am.

"Oppose" will lead to even higher gasoline prices, lots of money being made in the oil supply chain, and little petroleum left for our children and grandchildren. That's however what most votes support!

oppose!!! Big Oil RUNS America's governments. That's why many midwestern corn farmers are currently being subsidized $$ to NOT grow anything on a portion of their land? That's American politics for ya! In the early years of autos there was ethanol, steam power, and electricity. Seems Gasoline was cheaper than ethanol (and easier than steam and plug-ins) The idea of ethanol and bio- deasil making food corn and soybeans is also a popular myth
