Unless respondents mean some driving, but a lot less buying of petroleum products (beyond the unfortunate fraction of the population that is "priced out") what prevents prices from doubling?

I think that I have to disagree with your conclusion. I answer yes to this question because I can't think of an alternative that can replace my automobile, but that doesn't mean that I haven't altered my use of it, nor my driving habits.

Thus, fuel prices will continue to go higher until the pain gets too great for enough people to cut down or quit altogether. So, if gas was $4/gal in June of '08, the results of this poll suggest that gas can go all the way to $8/gal and we'll still have people sucking up this stuff as if there was no tomorrow.
