Support - fuel tax, if used solely to develop and maintain roads, is a fair way to assess usage and to encourage fuel efficiency.

All those who complain about the oil companies getting rich, yet oppose an increased tax, you are acting irrationally. Would you not rather see us collectively benefit from high prices rather than the oil supply chain. As we approach peak oil, prices will go higher to balance supply and demand. Without higher prices, demand will not be reduced fast enough. We could bring prices down if we permanently bought less!
There is occasional wastage of money, but who is worse: government bureaucrats or private enterprise - how fast Enron, Qwest, Level 3 etc.etc. are conveniently forgotten by those opposing the higher tax!

support. increase tax to reduce number of cars on the road and to make alternative forms of transport more enticing. the extra revenue should be used to fund schools and hospitals.
e.g. in Europe, more than half the cost of gas is tax.

Roads should be funded by users, and a fuel tax is a fair way to assess road use. If that means higher fuel taxes, so be it.

Seems the overwhelming response is opposed but if the Federal taxes increased everyone would pay them. You did not stop buying gas when prices topped $3.00 so why (or how) do you stop buying gas because of higher taxes?

If I didn't know that the government would spend any new tax revenue, I'd support it. The only way to cut consumption is to increase the cost.

we are being taxed to death, property taxes, income taxes, entertainment taxes; it seems that with all these increases in taxes, our take home pay is shrinking? Is our government trying to destroy the middle (working) class; who will work for the rich and who will help support the less fortunate if we are erased from the face of America? The other class suffering even more is the elderly who have contributed so much to our country in their hey day; they are being forced to continue working well past their 70s in order to survive!!

I agree with BEOWOLF74. Roads should be funded by users and the fuel tax should be levied accordingly.

I would be willing to pay much more if the increase was completely offset by a reduction of taxes elsewhere. I think roads should be funded exclusively by the users and not subsidised out of other taxes.
