There was a time not so many years ago when an individual could easily jack up the vehicle, remove the flatten tire, and replace it with the spare tire. Nowadays, changing a tire has become considerably more complicated. The useless frame jack requires one to slide under the vehicle and attach the scissor style jack to a fitting. Additionally, the crow bars have become shorter that only increases the difficulty of changing a tire.

I'd like to see a system designed similar to the manner that race cars have to jack up a car, four automatically deployed hydraulic jacks. This would certainly make changing a flat tire less complicated and safer.

Wow I read that totally wrong, I guess. I read the first as Change and Repaired the tire myself. 48% of people do NOT repair the tires themselves, no way.

I drove it to an air pump - inflated it and then went to a repair store. I can change it myself as long as someone helps me to loosen the bolts - but alone - no way!

The last time I got a bona fide flat, I changed it myself. That was in the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant and I was stuffed! It was not a pleasant experience.

The problem with this Poll is you didn't make available the most likely reply. When you get a flat tire you would replace flat tire with the spare tire. Then take the flat tire to a tire repair shop and have the tire repaired.

My last flat, the car was in the garage, I saw the flat, I removed the tire, stuck in a plug, and reinflated the tire with my handy-dandy 12V compressor that I carry in the car.

You left out an important option. By combining "change" with "repair" you failed to allow for those who change the tire with their spare but then have a shop repair the flat. I voted for "change/repair" but haven't repaired my own tire since I worked in a service station 40 years ago.

I pay an annual fee for AAA so why not use them! Changing a tire (infrequently) on my pickup is a real hassle. As usual the object of my ire this last time was a nail. Surprise!

The only flat tires I have ever had are all on Firestones. Since I have switched to GoodYears. I have never had a flat.

But I would get out, and change it to the Spare tire.

Realistically, I changed the tire myself - agree that you need to know how to do this - but then took the tire to a repair shop to have it actually repaired.

Uncanny ...

After I bought it, when the Honda needed new tires, got a 5th wheel/rim, had Firestone manager select the best of the four old tires, which he had mounted and balanced and thrown in the trunk (in place of that "doughnut" JOKE of a spare).

Well, Friday had a FLAT not TEN miles from home in N. Carolina, heading down here to Daytona Beach. Took about 15 minutes to pop on my full-size spare and make the trip. Found local Firestone Auto Care near the beach and resolved the flat problem!

I wouldn't have one of the so-called spare tires from the manufacturers in my automobiles any more ... can't travel on 'em; can't even exceed 40/45 mph, can they?
Also, put my old-fashioned 4-point tire tool in the trunk, too; it gives great leverage for loosening/tightening lugs!

Cheers!

"You do not want to have to go to the spare, because so many are that little tire in the trunk."

true, but it works... the only gripe i see is people don't know that the little tire has a max speed limit of only 50-55 mph

i've seen idiots doing the speed limit of 65+ on a spare donut tire!?! and i'll steer clear from them, since i don't know when the rim will fly off the vehicle

Last time, I re-inflated the tire since it was low and I could see the nail in it. However, if it's totally flat, I would change it myself most of time.

The ability to change a tire is one of the first steps towards becoming qualified to operate an automobile.

Being smart enough to carry the tools and equipment to change or repair a tire, and knowing how to do it, is elementary. Both of my parents were able to change a tire, and did. They expected all of their children to have that ability too.
