Shell should pay more than the $19,500,000 fine. They should pay additional penalties.

I wonder why it took the State of California so long before they took legal action? Now the question is when will they get the money?

When a company gets a government fine, they pass that fine on to the customers by raising their prices.
Subsequently, all others in that field will see a reason to also raise their prices, thereby scoring a bigger profit for no reason at all.

Wonder if Shell will pay or choose not to like Exxon hasn't paid on the Valdez yet. OF COURSE Shell won't admit any liability; the oil companies hardly ever do, nor the big corporations in-general.

ARCO was hit with a similar fine a few years ago. Did their prices go up? They are still the cheapest stations in California. When a hospital is fined for doing things wrong do their rates go up. I guess you wouldn't want them to be fined.

The article stated:
"Apart from paying $19.5 million in penalties to government agencies and legal costs, Shell must take a series of steps to improve spill and alarm monitoring and hazardous waste management at its stations, according to the judgment signed in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland."
It would appear that it is a fair settlement, providing that Shell makes the corrections ordered. I suspect that the EPA may get involved later if it is found that damage was done to the environment.

at 19.5 million they are getting by CHEAP why cloud the picture by admitting liabilty - smart move on Shell's part. The fine should have been 195 million (California needs the cash)

Good job reuters. I only wonder just exactly how much is $19.5 'min'!! I think their reporting is about as good as their editorial capabilities! And, Shell has gotten away very very cheap. Who is in their pocket?

Thats not enough. They should of forced them to sell their gasoline to the public at no profit for a year (no profit for Shell, not the individual stations)

A $19.5 mln fine does not worry Shell in the slightest. They know they can very easily pass it down to the consumer for any excuse whatsoever.

Despite the visions of waste the environmentalists have, no station can stay in business if they have product leaking from their tanks. The profit margin is so slim that they have to sell every gallon that they purchase. If they sell much fuel, their inventory control would show up leaks almost as quickly as leak detection equipment.
