What Happens to Hybrid and EV Car Batteries?

Hybrid Cars -- As the hybrid and electric vehicle markets continue to grow in the U.S., so too grows the number of batteries in these vehicles that eventually will need to be recycled.

While the heaviest volumes of discarded batteries are still years away from hitting recycling plants, the first set of aged and failed batteries from hybrids built over a decade ago are giving the automotive and recycling industries an opportunity to prepare for the coming storm, reports Edmunds.com.

“There are signs that the batteries in the very earliest Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids are starting to go, but those cars were sold in relatively small numbers,” says Edmunds.com Green Car Analyst John O’Dell. “Just 19,000 Insights and 33,000 Prius models were sold in the U.S. through the 2003 model year. That's not

"The energy used to recycle the batteries and carbon footprint of the construction and operation of those recycling facilities should be part of the total picture and MPGe number."

You can't include those into an MPGe number, but I agree with you, it would be interesting to get a total carbon footprint for anything we buy. Not just EVs, but gasoline-powered vehicles too, and computers and refrigerators and the carrots you buy at the supermarket.

"9.5 million tax dollars given away just to try to get recycling started."

That's about 3 cents for every US resident. I'll be glad to kick in for your family if you're too cheap. I'm glad to see them get a head start on a solution to a problem before it becomes a problem. I own and love a hybrid and will probably always have one as long as I can drive.

Recycling makes sense - why mine new materials when we already have refined materials that have lived their useful lives? The elements inside these batteries do not ware out - lithium is still lithium, so just take the materials from an old battery pack and use them to construct a new one.

10 years for a battery is pretty good, I am on my third battery in 8 years and that is a 'normal' one. $100 to replace and the battery is recycled somewhere.
Hope this is the way to go for now and technology will help recycle and also improve the battery. It does save gas but at what cost?

The energy used to recycle the batteries and carbon footprint of the construction and operation of those recycling facilities should be part of the total picture and MPGe number.

Just like ethanol, the whole picture isn't used to compare apples to apples. What ever is convienient to move the agenda is used. The real inconvienent truth.

I wonder what the cost would be for a recycled battery and if the warranty accompanying it is as good as a warranty for a new battery.

According to Earth911.com, "Car batteries are the most recycled products in the U.S., having a 98 percent to 99 percent recycling rate. Most individuals simply return their old car batteries to the dealership or the store where they are purchasing their replacement."

What's the problem?

This is like old tires that are heaped into piles in scrap yards, only more dangerous and a definite target hazard for all fire departments nationwide.

This is another example of lets get to market, we'll worry about the details later. They had to know one day something would have to be done to dispose of the batteries. And NOW when the first gen are reaching the end of their life cycle, all of a sudden there's panic about "oh my, what do we do with them?".
